What Does an Individual Award Mean?

An individual award is a reward or certification given to a person for successfully completing a task. It is the compensation a participant receives as a result of an assessment of their accomplishments.

 

Awards are awarded as a mark of respect and honour to people who have accomplished remarkable achievements. India has received many awards because there have been numerous noteworthy achievements in numerous fields.

 

Following are the most common award categories in India:

  • Civilian Awards
  • Gallantry Awards
  • National Sports Awards in India

 

Civilian Awards

Civilian Awards are given to individuals for great accomplishments in their line of employment. The President of India awards these honours to those who deserve them on Republic Day.These Civilian awards were first given out in 1954.

 

Civilian Awards are classified according to their level of honour.

  • Bharat Ratna
  • Padma Vibhushan
  • Padma Bhushan
  • Padma Shri

 

Bharat Ratna  The Bharat Ratna is Indias highest civilian honour. Contributions to science literature the arts and public service are recognised with this award. In 2013 sports were included in this award category.

 

Padma Vibhushan  It is the secondhighest and most prestigious civilian honour in the nation and is given to individuals for their outstanding contributions to literature the arts science and public service.

 

Padma Bhushan  Padma Bhushan is Indias thirdhighest civilian honour. It is given to those with accomplishments for service in any field including that provided by government employees including physicians and scientists but excludes those employed by public sector organisations.

 

Padma Shri  It is the fourthhighest civilian honour in India. It is sometimes referred to as Padma Shree and is granted to people for their outstanding work in fields where government personnel provide services.

 

Gallantry Awards

Gallantry Awards are given to members of the armed forces for their bravery and valour.

 

In India the following gallantry awards are given:

  • Param Vir Chakra
  • Ashoka Chakra
  • Mahavir Chakra
  • Kirti Chakra
  • Vir Chakra
  • Shaurya Chakra

 

Param Vir Chakra  This honour which is given to a soldier for displaying exceptional bravery skill and heroism during a time of conflict is regarded as the greatest military honour in India. The first of these honours was presented on January 26 1950.

 

Mahavir Chakra The Maha Vir Chakra Indias secondhighest military honorary medal after the Param Vir Chakra is given for actions of exceptional bravery when facing an adversary whether they occur on land at the water or in the air. It took the place of the Distinguished Service Order (DSO) in Britain.

 

Vir Chakra  The Vir Chakra is Indias third highest and the most wellknown military honour given to soldiers and army leaders for bravery while battling the enemy on land sea or air.

 

Ashoka Chakra  The Ashok Chakra is awarded to civilians or military people for most conspicuous bravery an act of daring or the most outstanding act of heroism or selfsacrifice away from the battlefield.

 

Kirti Chakra  In 1952 the Kirti Chakra award was established. It gained the name Kirti Chakra on January 27 1967.

 

Shaurya Chakra   Awarded for bravery bravery or selfsacrifice when not engaged in direct combat with the enemy the Shaurya Chakra is a military award in India.

 

National Awards

The list of awards in India also contains a number of National Awards in a number of categories including sports movies and literature in addition to these Civilian and Gallantry Awards. Here are a few of Indias national honours:

Indira Gandhi Prize for Peace & Development  The prestigious prize was established in 1985 to recognise individuals for their extraordinary contributions to international peace and development.

 

Gandhi Peace Prize  On October 2 1994 the Gandhi Peace Prize was established to highlight the importance of Gandhis values throughout the world.

 

Bhartiya Jnanpith Awards  It is Indias most popular literary prize established by Bharatiya Jnanpith in 1961. This honour is given to persons who have produced notable literary works.

 

Sahitya Akademi Awards  These prizes which were established in 1954 by the Indian government are given to authors of extraordinary publications with quality.
